Frankincense (of the genus Boswellia) is indeed an impressive plant, reaching up to 30 meters in height under favorable conditions. It is a tree or shrub of the amber family, which is distinguished by its abundant leaves and small white or pale pink flowers.
Frankincense is botanically a close relative of the myrrh tree (Commiphora), although the two trees differ in both appearance and uses. Both, however, are sources of prized substances used for centuries - frankincense (frankincense resin) and myrrh (myrrh resin), which have a long history of use in religious rituals, perfumery, natural medicine and aromatherapy.
