Gutes Ex. - Texte in franz., engl., spanisch. - In the course of our short existence, each of us spends our days collecting the images that implant themselves on our consciousness, on our view of the world, our thoughts. Our eyes click open and shut like the lens of a camera in an atempt to retain not only the image but also the event as it unfolds. We want to capture it and keep it in its entirety so that we can relive it again tomorrow. And the day afer. And forever. Which sphere of influence has had the most impact on Roger De Conynck ? Incontestably, it is art. That which sustains Roger De Conynck - theatre, cinema, opera, painting - has at the same time all to easily consumed him. After art comes the man in the street, the man who stops for nothing, who runs, fleeing his humdrum existence. Then there are the others: the boxer, the waiter, the model, the artist, all of whom are part of everyday life, flitting between the watchful eye and camera, which misses nothing. Those who have caught De Conynck's attention are contained in a sparkling collection of poses, shapes, silences, deep intakes of breath - prisoners of these as much as of their search for that special meeting or for eternity. Each day sees De Conynck add another name to his list. Each name, each new, charming conquest is rendered immortal by the tranquil waters of that magical mix of liquids known only to the photographer. The encounter with De Conynck the all-seeing, De Conynck the artist and De Conynck the alchemist of reality comes as a totally unexpected surprise. Somewhere between entering the studio and going back out onto the street, something happens to the photographer's model. It's nothing to do with the subject "losing his soul", but because he has been seen in magical surroundings. For De Conynck, this, and something more important still - the soft, measured voice of the artist, the concept of freedom, which does not prevent the images from being "imprisoned" in the dark, quiet room - is the most important part of the model. It is that freedom that we find only in ourselves and which, timidly, we demonstrate when we allow ourselves to be enchanted by words in those domains where the values of the artist hold sway. In each of the bodies captured by De Conynck, there exists a search as different as the subject's world. Silently they plunge themselves into eternal selfexamination, as if part of that eternity implied a different form of being.
