Einband leicht berieben. - Intelligence is the particular gift of the human being. It can be summarized as the capacity to instantly adjust to input, to comprehend and quickly and efficiently process a 'given'-to respond with pure mental flexibility, while retaining the native curiosity which is the foundation of higher thought. These qualities, as enumerated, are precisely those required to comprehend the installations of Anton Henning. His work, in its range and variety, remains a dance of conceptual structures of mind, a dance whose symbols pair off, draw back and in their correspondance and charged polarity present us with the relationship and the 'space' of a structure. The title of the installation at White Columns, 'Soup', is thus entirely apropos. The installation functions, first of all, as a 'minestrone', whose vegetable ingredients, (i.e. the diversity of art genres) are felicitiously mixed. Soup, by this reading, is a metonym for 'life-world' - a term 'Lebenswelt', used by phe-nomenologist Edmund Husserl to describe that complex of outlooks, mores, practices and attitudes which, in every culture, provides a conditional, inter-subjective sense of the truth. 'Soup', accordingly, can be seen as Henning's home, his life.
