George Anson (1697-1772) was a British Royal Navy officer and politician; he sailed around the world, 1740-4, attacking the Spanish in the Pacific, burning Payta in Peru, and capturing the Manila galleon with a treasure of half a million pounds.The reforms he instituted as a naval administrator increased the efficiency of the British fleet and contributed to its success in the Seven Years War (1756–63) against France.
