Daniel Carter Beard (1850–1941) was a prominent American illustrator, author, and youth leader, best known for his pivotal role in the founding and development of the Boy Scouts of America (BSA). Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, Beard combined his artistic talents with a passion for outdoor education, illustrating works for authors like Mark Twain and writing his own influential books, including The American Boy’s Handy Book. In 1905, he founded the Sons of Daniel Boone, a youth organization focused on outdoor skills and pioneer values, which later merged into the BSA upon its creation in 1910. As one of the first National Scout Commissioners, affectionately called "Uncle Dan" by Scouts, he helped shape the organization's programs and ethos, inspiring generations of boys to connect with nature and embrace self-reliance. Beard’s legacy lives on through his contributions to Scouting, his enduring books, and the preservation of his Cincinnati birthplace as a National Historic Landmark.
