General Description

  1. The definitive book of Studio Ghibli's ``Another Masterpiece'' ``I Hear the Sea,'' which is deeply loved across time - finally published!
Studio Ghibli produced the full-length animated work ``I Can Hear the Sea'' as a TV special in 1993 (original work by Saeko Himuro).
This work, set in Kochi and Tokyo, depicts the irreplaceable days of the main characters Rikako Muto, Taku Morizaki, and other high school students. It was directed by Tomomitsu Mochizuki under the name of Studio Ghibli Young Production Group. , animation director Katsuya Kondo, art director Naoya Tanaka, and other young staff who are responsible for the future of Japanese animation, created this work with dreams and passion.
This work, which has been passed down as a legend since it first aired on Nippon Television on May 5, 1993, has recently been "discovered" by young viewers. When it was re-released in theaters in Shibuya, Tokyo (Bunkamura Le Cinema Shibuya Miyashita) in March 2024, it became a long-running hit with packed houses every day, and became a symbol of the Reiwa "revival" phenomenon.

This book, published after 31 years, generously includes as many visuals as can currently be collected. In addition to the film story told with the best 30 cuts selected by director Mochizuki himself, various color illustrations with beautiful image quality, character settings, art boards, etc., there are 140 items drawn during the original serialization in the monthly magazine "Animage". For the first time, all beautiful illustrations by Katsuya Kondo, including unused ones, are included in color.
In addition, character drafts drawn before the series and valuable materials from Mr. Kondo's sketchbooks are also published for the first time.
The gallery at the end of the book features images of posters, promotional materials, and past products from the time, and also includes new interviews with director Mochizuki, animation director Kondo, and producer Nozomi Takahashi from the time of production and for this book.
This is a luxurious visual book that fully conveys the charm of Ghibli's legendary masterpiece ``I Hear the Sea'', aimed at Generation Z who found new value in this work and fans of Real Time in 1993.
