Kupava-16 Soviet 16mm Movie Film Editing Table Viewer

Professional Film Editing: The Kupava-16 is a 16mm film editing viewer made by the renowned Lytkarino Optical Glass Factory. It offers both frame-by-frame and continuous viewing modes on a lit screen you can use in normal room light. A practical tool for film restoration, editing, and vintage film enthusiasts.

Multiple Units Available: We regularly receive Kupava-16 viewers and keep several units in stock under this listing. As all units are visually similar and fully functional, we use one set of representative photos rather than photographing each individual viewer.

The specific unit you receive may show slightly different cosmetic wear than the one pictured, but will be in the same very good working condition with all functionality as described.

Features

About the Screen: Like all 16mm editing viewers, the Kupava uses a frosted glass screen with a diffuser behind it. The image is intentionally soft and lower in contrast than a projector picture — this is by design, to let you check frames, find cuts, and review footage during editing. It is a working editing screen, not a high-definition display.

Condition

Very Good Working Condition: This Kupava-16 editing viewer is pre-owned and in very good condition. It shows minor traces of previous use, but all functions operate properly. Cleaned and tested before listing.

Owning Vintage Equipment: This is a 40+ year old Soviet-made mechanism that needs occasional hands-on maintenance — this is normal use, not a fault. From time to time the two internal mirrors collect dust and should be wiped clean, and the light block may need light reseating to align the image. Both are simple servicing steps: a few minutes with a flat screwdriver, no technical skill required. If you're new to vintage gear, please feel free to reach out and we'll gladly walk you through it.

Bulb Information

Light Source: 8V 20W bulb with a B15d/18 double contact bayonet base — internationally known as BA15d. The glass envelope is approximately 21mm in diameter and 58mm long. It runs off the viewer's built-in step-down transformer.

Finding Replacements: The base is a standard international fitting, not a Soviet-only one, so there is no need to modify the socket or rewire anything. Bulbs of the same 8V 20W BA15d specification are commonly used in microscope illuminators and are stocked by microscope and laboratory bulb suppliers worldwide — searching for "8V 20W BA15d" will bring up options. When ordering, do check the glass dimensions, as larger envelopes of the same base will not fit the housing.

Please stick to 8V. The transformer is not voltage-regulated. A 6V bulb of the same base will fit and light up but will burn out quickly, and a 12V one will be noticeably dim.

A note on LED: We don't recommend LED for this viewer, and it is not a drop-in swap. The optical system is built around a small filament sitting at the focal point of the condenser lens, and an LED spreads its light differently — the usual result is a bright center with dark corners on the screen. The original bulb type remains the best match for the optics.

What's Included

Bonus: An additional spare replacement bulb is included — ready to use when the installed bulb needs replacing.
