Water-Based Hobby Color was introduced in 1982, designed for safe and comfortable use in home environments.
In 2019, after nearly 38 years, the primary material formula was revamped, significantly improving its performance and safety, allowing users to easily achieve professional painting results at home.
Product Features
- Water-Soluble Acrylic Resin Paint: Can be thinned with water. Compared to solvent-based acrylic resin paints, it uses milder organic solvents in smaller quantities, resulting in a softer smell and easier handling.
- Water Resistance: Once dried, the paint becomes water-resistant. Before drying, it can be thinned or cleaned with water. After drying, cleaning requires specialized cleaners like Mr. Tool Cleaner Kai.
- Excellent Gloss and Smoothness: The paint film provides exceptional gloss and a smooth finish.
Thinning and Coating Recommendations
- Brush Painting: No thinning is usually required and the paint can be used directly. If the paint is too viscous, add a small amount of water or Hobby Color Thinner to loosen it.
- Airbrushing: Thin the paint at a ratio of 1:1 with Hobby Color Thinner. While water can also be used for thinning, excessive water may cause the paint to bead on the surface and extend drying time.
- Coating Layers: For brush painting, 1–2 coats are recommended; for airbrushing, apply 2–3 thin layers. If the base color shows through the topcoat, additional layers can be applied as needed.
Gloss Adjustment (Gloss → Semi-Gloss/Matte)
- For a matte finish, add at least 15% H40 Flat Base to the paint.
- For a semi-gloss finish, add 5–10% Flat Base.
Improvements in the New Formula
- Enhanced Paint Film Strength: Improved gloss finish quality.
- Faster Drying Time: Speeds up the painting process.
- Expanded Pigment Range: With changes to the raw materials, more pigments are now available, closely resembling those used in Mr. Color (except for blue pigments and metallic pigments). Some paint colors and finishes have been updated as a result.
Cautions
- Contains Organic Solvents: Ensure proper ventilation during and after use.
- Do Not Mix with Other Model Paints: Only compatible with Water-Based Hobby Color products.
