He started his career as a chopstick craftsman at the age of 15 and has been in that field for over 60 years. This collection was created by Masahiro Furui, the only traditional craftsman who specializes in chopsticks in Wakasa lacquer.

There is a lacquer tree. There is a shell and a handful of shells. These are ordinary natural materials, and the hands of the craftsman reach out and work there. And something that embodies the beauty of Wakasa is born.
Wakasa lacquerware, created to suit the climate and soil, comes in vermilion, yellow, pear-colored, and green colors. The robustness of the lacquer born from nature and the patterns of shells and mollusks evoke the beaches of Wakasa and tell the history of the town.
Wakasa lacquer chopsticks are born from this simplicity, always vividly expressing the desire to find warmth, softness, and newness.

■ About Wakasa lacquerware
Mother of pearl, eggshell, and gold leaf. Scattered within the lacquer, they shine beautifully when illuminated by light.
"Wakasa lacquerware" is a traditional craft of Obama City. The history of Wakasa lacquerware dates back to the Keicho period (1566-1615), about 400 years ago, when a wealthy merchant named Kumiya Rokurozaemon, who was a purveyor to the Obama domain at the time, presented a Chinese lacquered tray called Zonsei to the domain's lord, Sakai Tadakatsu.
Sakai Tadakatsu had Matsuura Sanjuro, a lacquerer for the castle town, make a tray that resembled Zonsei. Based on this, Sanjuro came up with the idea of Kikujin-nuri, a pattern that resembles the ocean floor of Wakasa Bay. Tadakatsu protected this with the entire domain, and many beautiful designs were created by lacquerers who inherited the techniques from Sanjuro.
There are over 400 traditional Wakasa lacquerware patterns recorded in the books currently kept at Matsukan.
Most of the patterns are made using a method called okoshi-moyo, where the pattern is created by applying a base coat and then placing materials such as eggshells on top. Besides eggshells, the materials used to create the patterns are mostly natural, including pine needles, shells, flowers, and string. The beauty that comes from simple materials is one of the charms of Wakasa lacquerware.
