Vintage Tribal Borneo Dayak Ceremonial Feast Wood Bowl with a Pair of Seated Aso Dragon Handles. This handsome ceremonial bowl was purchased from an estate and we were told is was 1930s. It is carved from a single piece of wood and has a pair of aso anthropomorphic seated figures as handles with dragon/dog heads and human bodies with hands holding the bowl.
A prominent and widespread theme of the art of Borneo is a mythical animal that combines attributes of the dog and dragon in a single creature called aso. This animal signifies protection and status, and use of the image is traditionally restricted to the upper class, like the chief.
