Can Opener Army Style FRED P51 Hiking Camping Emergency Survival Scout
F.R.E.D (Field Ration Eating Device)
An opener that can also be used as a cutting edge, groove cleaner, screwdriver, and more!
A handy nickel-plated pocket can opener. The stainless steel blade is very sharp so it takes very little effort to cut through cans. Plus it its extremely lightweight and portable, great for camping, tramping and traveling. These handy can openers work by using a back-and-forth motion to open any standard can.
One of the smartest & greatest invention of the army. Small & easy to carry around. Faster than a normal can opener if the user has experience. The can opener is a small folding blade used to open canned rations (such as K-rations or C-rations) among many other uses.
A good copy of the U.S. P51 item that came in the ration packs. Developed during World War II, reported to have been a rapid 30 days design project in the summer of 1942 by the U.S. Army Subsistence Research Laboratory in Chicago, IL and have hardly changed at all.
There’s a technique to it, and there’s a slight learning curve involved. (see instructions below)
It’s all about leverage, work smart not hard you are the master of your fate. Army issued for decades, and so tough GIs call it “the John Wayne”.
Pocket-sized and consists of a short metal blade that serves as a handle (which doubles as a flat-blade screwdriver), with a small, hinged metal tooth that folds out to pierce the can lid. A notch just under the hinge point keeps the opener hooked around the rim of the can as the device is "walked" around to cut the lid out.
This little beauty has the can opener and a hole to put cord through so you can hang it round your neck so it won't get lost.
Keep it where: In the first aid kit, in the tool box, in the lunch box, in the glove box, in the kitchen drawer, in the office desk, in the garage, in the backpack, on the keyring, in a wallet, in your dorm room, some in the kitchen drawer, with you bugout bag, and so many more
Great item for the kids camper troops, great inexpensive veteran gift
What have I used mine on: boxes, my car battery as a screw driver when I needed a flat head and didn't have one, letter opening, string cutter, nylon band cutter, tape off a box, strip wire, scrap objects, cut plastic shrink wrap off packages on bottles.
Saves your keys from being used as tools. Just like you were always told not to do.
Designed to open cans but it also works to cut open plastic bottles, bags of all kinds and packaging on hard to open packages etc. camping, as part of an emergency kit. Portable and easy to use. Hold long ways up and down with small blade hooked over edge of the can and rock back and forth around lid of can. Great item to have around when the power goes out too. These are no longer issued to the troops so they also make great gifts to the guys overseas not one soldier has ever complained about these when it comes to opening those MRE BAGS. Note: Vets have told me different stories of where they would hide these. In the past soldiers would hide a can opener in there boot seam or under the lining of their shoe, or wore them between there dog tags as an escape tool. This is the all time best ever invented simple emergency tool.
