Ignatius and his friend Saint Polycarp were both taught about Christ by Saint John the Apostle. Ignatius was chosen to be bishop of Antioch, and served faithfully until the Emperor Trajan condemned him to death in Rome. Along the journey, Ignatius wrote pastoral letters to the Christian communities in Asia Minor. From his beautiful writing, we learn about the faith, sacraments, and challenges of the early Church.
