This book, a compilation of records from the French National Assembly dating from 1790, chronicles the Assembly's lively debates on the issue of tithes and the proposed plan to replace them. Published in the immediate aftermath of these events, it offers a unique insight into the thinking of the Assembly on religious matters, featuring arguments made by prominent members of the clergy from Alsace as well as counterarguments from the National Assembly. Through these debates, the author examines the Assembly's attempt to balance the desire to fund the church and provide for the poor with the growing anti-clerical sentiment of the time.
