Vintage Historical Map Print

A vintage 1965 print (illustration) depicting:

·        Map of 'Indiae (India) Tabula Moderna" as it appeared in the Strassburg 1522 printing of Claudius Ptolemy's Geographia.

The Southeast Asia map depicted in this print was published in a 1522 (or 1525) edition of Claudius Ptolemy’s "Geographia". This atlas allowed the reader to spatially orient religious beliefs and mythologies. Showing part of India, this particular map featured a pictorial rendering of the "Daksha yajna," an important event in Hindu scripture.

Claudius Ptolemy (fl. AD 127-145) was an ancient geographer, astronomer, and mathematician. He is known today through translations and transcriptions of his work, but little is known about his life besides his residence in Alexandria, Egypt.

Several of his works are still known today, although they have passed through several alterations and languages over the centuries. His geographic and cartographic work was immensely influential. In the Planisphaerium, Ptolemy discusses the stereographic projection.

One of his best-known work is his Geographia, in eight books.  The print for sale here depicts an ancient map from these volumes.

In 1295, a Greek monk found a copy of Geographia in Constantinople; the emperor ordered a copy made and the Greek text began to circulate in eastern Europe. In 1393, a Byzantine diplomat brought a copy of the Geographia to Italy, where it was translated into Latin in 1406 and called the Cosmographia. The manuscript maps were first recorded in 1415.

The vintage 1965 print offered here depicts a 1522 Ptolemy map published in Strassburg, Germany.

I will send a combined invoice reflecting your savings.
The Nature of Prints & Engravings: It was not until the 20th century that prints were commonly produced for the print itself. Prior to this, virtually all prints (and engravings) were produced as illustrations to be included in a manuscript, book, newspaper, or pamphlet. Therefore, a vast majority of original prints have been over the years removed from these original sources. Prints are produced using many different techniques: relief printing (woodcut & wood engraving), intaglio printing (steel & copper plate engraving, drypoint, aquatint, etc), and planographic printing (lithography, serigraphy, inkjet, laser, etc.).  While the commercial value of a print depends on such factors as age, rarity, and condition, the real value of a print is its tie to its history and/or its esthetic beauty.
