These little books are a pair in contents, though not in publication year or binding.The text volume, published in 1816, is bound in red leather with titles in gilt on the spine, and it is in good condition, having cracked hinges, but the boards still attached, loss to the head and foot of the spine, and the boards generally bumped. Inside, it lacks the free endpapers, has an ownership stamp on the first blank, occasional light foxing, mainly clean, with no loose pages. 13cm, 5.25 inches, tall, xi, 193 pages, plus 8pp publisher's advertisements. The plate volume, published in 1804, is bound in brown leather, boards worn with losses to the leather and re-backed roughly in brown leather. inside, it has a well-used look, some toning to the paper, some water stains, one plate has a chip to the margin, and another has a very short closed tear. All the 40 plates are present. They show a rather more graphically violent view of history than would be presented to children now. Very dynamic and dramatic. 12cm, 4.75 inches, tall, vi, plus 40 plates printed on one side of the paper only.
