La V-Disc (abbreviazione di Victory Disc, ovvero dischi della vittoria) è stata un'etichetta discografica, nata durante la seconda guerra mondiale grazie ad un accordo tra il governo statunitense e varie aziende - principalmente RCA e Columbia Records
- per la produzione di dischi destinati ai militari americani impegnati
nella guerra.Sui dischi, confezionati in pacchi da 20 pezzi, furono
incise le
canzoni e le melodie che accompagnarono le truppe americane durante le
vicende della seconda guerra mondiale, dallo scenario europeo allo
scacchiere del Pacifico.Nella metà degli anni quaranta
il mondo musicale statunitense fu bloccato da uno sciopero
sindacale.Agli artisti fu però permesso di incidere a titolo gratuito

pezzi, incisi su 906 dischi a 78 giri (su alcune facciate erano presenti
più tracce) e ciò al fine di allietare le truppe al fronte. Dopo
l'incisione e la loro duplicazione le matrici originali dei dischi
appena realizzati furono completamente distrutte e di ciò fu incaricato
il maggiore Howard C. Bronson che in alcune foto è ritratto con il
martello tra le mani mentre svolge l'incarico.Oggi esistono in
circolazione, presso gli amatori, ancora vecchi V-Disc fruscianti e
spesso molto rovinati. Negli anni sessanta circolavano delle edizioni ripulite, specialmente da parte di giapponesi. In Italia Adriano Mazzoletti (negli anni '70) ha curato per la Fonit una bella riedizione dei V-Disc, ma solo grazie alla moderna tecnologia digitale si è potuto rimasterizzarli e così riascoltare le tracce originali.Nei V-Disc troviamo quasi tutti gli artisti più in voga negli anni quaranta: da Frank Sinatra a Lena Horne, da Hellen Forrest a Glenn Miller a Tommy Dorsey e molti altri.

V-Disc contenevano presentazioni a parola di bandleader e musicisti che
desideravano "buona fortuna e preghiere per i soldati " .
Glenn Miller, nel dicembre del 1943, introdusse un disco dicendo:
"Questo è il capitano Glenn Miller che parla per l'orchestra di comando
di addestramento delle forze aeree dell'esercito e speriamo che voi
soldati delle forze alleate godiate di questi V-Disc che stiamo
realizzando solo per voi "
Sotto la guida di James Caesar Petrillo , la Federazione americana dei musicisti ( AFM ) fu coinvolta nello sciopero dei musicisti del 1942-44 in cui vi fu un divieto di registrazione di quattro compagnie. Il 27 ottobre 1943 [2] George Robert Vincent
convinse Petrillo a consentire ai musicisti del sindacato di registrare
dischi per i militari purché i dischi non fossero venduti e i maestri
fossero eliminati.
I musicisti che avevano contratti con diverse etichette discografiche
erano ora in grado di registrare insieme per questa impresa senza scopo
di lucro. Un gruppo composto da Louis Armstrong , Coleman Hawkins e Art Tatum ha registrato concerti che sono stati pubblicati come V-Disc. Il capitano Vincent gestiva il programma dalla divisione dei servizi speciali. Le responsabilità di artisti e repertorio sono state gestite da Steve Scholes e Walt Heebner, entrambi della RCA Victor , Morty Palitz della Decca Records e Tony Janak della Columbia Records . Il programma iniziò per l'esercito, ma presto fu fornita musica per la Marina e i marines. [1]
