1950's CarterFone phone electronic device model C-3-M&H 1959- 1966 display RARE.
Beware , this weights roughly 10 pounds !
Invented by Thomas Carter, Carter Electronics Corp. 6762 Greenville Ave. Dallas 31 , Texas.
Sold between 1959 - 1966.
A device that manually connects a 2-way radio system to the telephone system, like the commonly used 2-way radios used on oil rigs, allowing oil workers at sea to receive & make phones calls. Which was it's Original intent / idea to create this. but used anywhere, where needed.
Approximately 3,500 Carter Fones were sold to dealers & distributors. In San Antonio, Texas the Carter Fones were marketed by a General Electric radio dealer ; Industrial Radio.
Bell Telephone Systems (MA-Bell) tried to stop him & halt this product from being made. They sued but, lost the suit Via a FCC ruling. 1st time Ma-bell lost Any case in court.
Black bakelite bodies ( both pieces), with the star pattern in the transmitter cradle , not the traditional circular hole pattern.
All wires were cut off but, both complete with electronics inside.
This wall / table presentation piece / display is 12 inch X 12 inch X 5 inch tall.
Clearly one of the few remaining devices in existence, AND fewer "under glass" presentation pieces made.
On the back of the wood has 1 of 16 (& other information) marked on it (See last photo).
This one comes with a color photocopy of the 1963 patent certificate , in a plastic film sleeve (taped to the wood).
SEE PHOTOS 9 / 10 / 11 ; where the plexi glass top has damage. major crack (s) top piece- left lower corner Only. I added 2 spots of super glue to ensure the piece doesn't pop out in transit.
No other damage found anywhere. Previous owner had knocked this off the wall........ (as said = 10 pounds)
The last Carter Fone I know that sold on e-bay ,was back in 2014 for $6,200.00 !!! And it wasn't a presentation piece like this.
When viewing photos of these on the internet, only a few found , and as a "display" like this, fewer seen and all seem to be in museums ; phone museum, electrical device museum & 1 in a computer equipment museum.
The historical significant of this device in regards to the court case VS Ma -bell was & still is huge ! Ton's of articles on the internet about this device specifically , And that case. this court case has been brought up in newer court cases over the years as "evidence for our side" to win our case.
Buy it and resell it ! Find a museum who doesn't have one but , "needs it".
Just collecting dust in this house and will be buried under other parts of my collection (s) soon.
I don't collect phones.
Remember 10 pounds shipping weight !!!!!
NOTE; E-BAY MESSAGE FROM Mr. McKeown (see photos). They think it's odd ball / Rare enough to be on their show !
Here's your opportunity for You to buy this and "BECAME A STAR" on T.V. and resell it for more.
