Sparring Jian by Scott M. Rodell

Sparring Jian designed by Scott M. Rodell

Traditionally, Chinese martial artists have used «waste» of wood during combat practice to inform their training and refine their technique. While these wastes are generally safe, they have serious limitations in learning how swords actually behave during combat. Hanwei’s Sparring Jian has been designed by Scott Rodell to handle as close to the sharp jian as possible while providing rounded edges and secure bending during a push.

Using the same steel blade, advanced heat treatment regime and handle accessories that Rodell-designed «Hanwei Cutting Jian» students can practice shapes, sparring and cutting, all with the same design. Through these three disciplines, the student can take a holistic approach to his jianfa training; what works in forms should work in combat should work in court should work in shapes, etc.

Scott M. Rodell’s martial arts career includes more than 30 years of training at Yang Style Taijiquan. He has trained with several prominent Chinese teachers in both the United States and China. He is the founding director of the Great River Taoist Center, based in Virginia and branches in the U.S., Russia, Estonia, the Netherlands, Germany and Australia. Rodell is the author of several books, including: «Chinese fencing, the Taiji Jian tradition of the Yang family,» «Dandaofa Xuan – Chinese Long Sabre Anthology,» «Foundations of Wudang’s Sword Method – Selected Translations with Commentary of a Chinese Fencing Manual» , «Shi Jian Pu – Ten Skill Manual with the Sword – A Handbook on Handling the Chinese Sword» and «A Practical Guide to Test The Court for The Cutting of the Sword» , all of which are highly recommended.
