Uranium glass is a type of glass that contains small amounts of uranium oxide, which gives it a yellow or green color. It was first made in the early 19th century and was popular in the Art Nouveau and Art Deco periods. Today, uranium glass is no longer made commercially, but there are still a few manufacturers who produce it for collectors.
For nearly 2000 years, uranium glass has been used to produce yellow-green glass. When exposed to UVb light, the glass emits a brilliant florescent green. The Roman mosaics contain a small amount of uranium oxide in glass. A collection of uranium glass vase fragments were discovered during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries on a Maryland plantation.
-----
When and why did the United States stop producing uranium glass? The US government halted uranium glass production shortly before World War II, as uranium became more tightly regulated. Since uranium oxide was deregulated in 1958, when this moratorium expired, uranium glass has continued to be manufactured, though it is not the same as before.
