Terrific 4x6 inch photograph of a World War I Red Cross nurse with Red Cross rescue (mercy) dog.  4x6 glossy photo shows Miss Carter Mullikin circa 1915.  Mercy dogs (also known as ambulance or rescue dogs) served with great distinction during World War I. The dogs would seek out wounded soldiers and carry first aid supplies in the field. They also provided comfort to dying soldiers.
