Essays on Natural History Third Series by Charles Waterton
Publisher: Longman, Brown, Green, Longmans and Roberts, 1858, second edition. Bound in the publisher's cloth with titles on the spine in gilt. Good condition, with short splits to the hinge at the head of the spine, the binding still being sound and tight. Spine lightened, corners bumped. Bookplate of Robert Washington Oates on the front endpaper, who was a cousin of Captain Lawrence Oates (1880-1912), a member of Scott's Antarctic Expedition. There is an ownername and signs of the removal of another bookplate on the free endpaper. Some toning to a few pages, mainly clean and tight in its binding. Waterton expresses some entertaining and antiquated views on natural history, denying the existence of human cannibalism and the reasoning capacities of apes and monkeys. A very interesting look into the worldviews of a different age. Small 8vo, 7 inches, 18cm tall, xviii, xlvii, 290 pages.
