British Punch magazine -- from 1841 to 2002, the magazine cast a satirical eye on life in Britain. It charted the interests, concerns and frustrations of the country and today it stands as an invaluable resource not just as cartoon art and satire, but as primary source material for historians.

Illustrator: John Tenniel, from British Punch humor/satire magazine, September 30, 1882, pulled from the magazine, not a modern reproduction. Double page size 10 1/2 x 16 inches. Condition: very good -- still bright and clean, no storage wear, center fold as published with no tears or holes at the crease; backside is blank. THE LION'S JUST SHARE

'The Lions Just Share', 1882. The British Lion stands proudly on his Egyptian captive. He is watched by Italy, a French poodle, the Russian Bear, Spain, Germany and the two headed eagle of Austria. Turkey is depicted as a cowering fox. There had recently been an uprising in Egypt led by Colonel Arabi in protest at European intervention in Egyptian affairs. Turkey had recently been excluded from an agreement that left the six European powers to protect the operation of the Suez Canal. Britain had led the way in putting down the uprising. From Punch, or the London Charivari, September 30, 1882.

This image was made in the context of the British having conquered Egypt but then the other great powers stepped in to check British expansion and forced the British to make Egypt a mere protectorate and to promise that they wouldn't stay in Egypt. A promise which they broke as the British stayed in Egypt untill after WWII.

I have other hard-to-find original Punch cartoon illustrations for sale; combine orders with no extra shipping fees.

Punch, a magazine of humor and satire, ran from 1841-2002. A very British institution renowned internationally for its wit and irreverence, it helped to coin the term "cartoon" in its modern sense as a humorous illustration.
