CHAGÜAI UPUL / Mapuche earrings

"Square hoops with embossed and dotted design in the center"

"Chagüai upul" are earrings used by Mapuche women to adorn their faces during rituals and festivities, especially weddings.

These earrings are particular due to their extraordinary big size. Made in a compact plate bell-shaped in square design.

These large earrings are usually attached to the top of the ear or other smaller earrings that go through the lobe. The plate is beautifully decorated with the representation of a four-petaled flower impeccably executed in the difficult artisanal technique of repoussé. This technique is achieved through tiny and precise strokes on the back of the plate, as a fine dotted pattern giving shape to the flower which resembles a subtle embroidery. They are decorated with abstract geometric motifs in incised technique making a dotted lines on the edges and a flower design in the center.

The object accuses a subtle patina as result of a prolonged use and passage of time. Very good condition considering the use and passage of time.
