Handley Page Hampden Bomber cover signed by Wing Commander Rod Learoyd VC

B24c RAF Museum Bomber Command cover with artwork by John Young showing a Handley Page Hampden of No 49 Squadron comemorating the first Victoria Cross awarded to a Pilot of Bomber Command 12/13 August 1940. Cover bears Jersey Diana & Charles Royal Wedding stamp and VC Jersey postmark.

This cover is hand signed by Rod Learoyd VC whose aircraft is shown on the cover artwork and was the first RAF Bomber Command pilot to be awarded the Victoria Cross. Learoyd was a pilot with No 49 Squadron based at Scampton in 1940 when he was to bomb the Dormund-Ems canal which carried barges to the Ruhr. This was a low level attack, the charges caused much damage and with the high amount of flak and the strong blinding searchlights it was a difficult operation. Two Hampdens did not return and for his part in the action Learoyd was awarded the Victoria Cross.
