Wicked Willie Written by Margaret A. Rawlins with illustrations by Gwen Forwood and Florence Holms
Publisher: Longmans, Green and Co., 1914, first edition. Rebound in patterned paper covered boards with a cloth spine, original front panel laid on. Signed and inscribed by the author. Illustrated with a colour frontispiece and line drawings throughout. Very good condition, rebound with new endpapers, some very small pinhole worming, hardly noticeable, original first and last blank page toned, a very few light marks, otherwise clean and bright. Inscribed by the author on the first blank, and on page 4 beneath a drawing of her grandson, a very poignant inscription recording his death at 7 years old, only a little over a month before the date of these inscriptions. The original caption to this drawing hopes for peace by Christmas. The book presents the causes and outbreak of WWI in the form of a story about 'Dame Europa's School' and Wicked Willie is the Kaiser. A very interesting view from the very beginning of this dreadful conflict. Large format, 32cm, 12.5 inches, tall, 35 pages.
