Publisher: Johan. Hayes (John Hayes), Cambridge, 1704. 12mo volume, 14.5cm, 5.75 inches, tall, rebound in brown leather with titles in gilt on an earlier title label. Good condition, with a bumped text block which has minor losses to some pages at the bottom of the spine, never impinging on the text or plates. Owner name on the title page, and further marginalia here and there throughout in the same hand. The plates are also inscribed on the back with their corresponding page numbers. Some light tide marks. Three of the plates have light ink marks, and some plates have short closed tears.
This is a rare edition of Ovid's Metamorphosis, illustrated with 11 folding engraved plates by Pieter Schenk, Amsterdam, also known as Petrus Schenk, or Peter Schenk the Elder. The plates all show events from the stories occurring in classical landscapes, the figures dominated by the landscape, and are rarer than the book.
