Shunsho, Katsukawa (1726 – 1792)
An Ukiyo-e painter and printmaker who lived in Edo, Katsukawa Shunsho first studied under the painters Katsukawa Shunsui (fl. 1744-64) and Ko Sukoku (1730-1804); then turned to prints. Although little is known about his personal life, he did teach many pupils, including Shuncho, Shundo, Shun'ei, Shunjo, Shunko, Shunzan and Shunro (Hokusai); usually referred to as the "Katsukawa School". Influenced by Harunobu, early prints by Shunsho depict Bijin. From the 1780's he is best known for prints of actors. A popular artist, Shunsho is one of the most important of his period and the level of his work is very high.
