Front caption reads,
"Tollbooth, Canongate, Edinburgh".

Back caption reads,
"Canongate Tolbooth -- was built in 1591, as a Jail and Court House. The
Canongate belonged to the Abbey of Holyrood. At a later date many of the
Scottish Nobility had residences here, and many traces still remain of its
former magnificence."
