Kawakami Otojiro (Nakamura Masatoshi), who became the darling of the age with his "opekepee-busi" and devoted his life to the development of new theater.
Momosuke (Morio Kazama), who became the adopted son of Yukichi Fukuzawa, but refused to accept Yukichi's backing and single-handedly paved the way for his own business career.
Momosuke's wife Fusako (Fumi Dan), Yukichi's second daughter.
The film depicts the love and sad will to live of these four people as they search for their lives while deeply involved in the political, economic, and cultural trends of the Meiji and Taisho eras.
