History & Background

The orange originated in Asia, specifically in Southern China, Northeast India, and Myanmar. The earliest mention of the sweet orange was in Chinese literature in 314 BC, a long time ago. Today, orange trees are one of the most cultivated fruit trees in the world.

It was the explorer Christopher Columbus who first brought this citrus fruit to North America in 1493. Sir Francis Carew is said to have grown the first orange trees in the UK on his estate in Surrey, some time before 1562.
