by Buddhists and animists.
The earliest mention of the belief in Kuman Thong can be found in the
18th century Thai fairytale of Khun Chang Khun Phaen, where the
character of Khun Phaen acquires a powerful spirit by removing the
foetus of his stillborn son from his wife.
Many shop owners in Thailand place a Kuman Thong statue in the front of their shop as they believe it will boost their business and give them good luck and fortune.

tricksters, with a particular fondness for teasing small children. When
this happens, the owner is supposed to chastise the spirit by striking
it lightly with a wooden rod while speaking to it in a stern tone. When
someone is no longer able to care for a Kuman Thong they can leave it at a Buddhist Temple.
