   British Artist Portrait Print

Tiny paper dimple at left; The edge toning is slightly exaggerated in picture(s)

T.S.Cooper who was to become one of the greatest and successful painters of animals in the British countryside during the Victorian era, was born in Canterbury in Kent in England in 1803.

With no formal training, save as a 12 year old working in a coach builders yard, he first entered the Royal Academy Schools before going to Belgium in 1829 to take up a teaching career and marrying. It was here he became friends with the great Belgian animal painter Eugène Verboeckhoven and it was he who was to have a dramatic influence upon his art.

Sheep and cattle were the most prominent themes in Cooper's paintings, set in fields, landscapes, barns, farms and depicted in all seasons and he enjoyed great success in his lucrative career with an endless string of patrons ready to commission his work.

Becoming a wealthy man, he was a great philanthropist in his birth place of Canterbury, using some of his wealth to distribute bread and coal to the poor each Christmas.

Thomas Sidney Cooper exhibited at both the British Institution and the Royal academy during a prolific life on numerous occasions.

The Nature of Prints & Engravings: It was not until the 20th century that prints were commonly produced for the print itself. Prior to this, virtually all prints (and engravings) were produced as illustrations to be included in a manuscript, book, newspaper, or pamphlet. Therefore, a vast majority of original prints have been over the years removed from these original sources. Prints are produced using many different techniques: relief printing (woodcut & wood engraving), intaglio printing (steel & copper plate engraving, drypoint, aquatint, etc), and planographic printing (lithography, serigraphy, inkjet, laser, etc.). While the commercial value of a print depends on such factors as age, rarity, and condition, the real value of a print is its tie to its history and/or its esthetic beauty.
