Located in a fishing village at South Beach (Hilton Head) in South Carolina, the legend of the Salty Dog Café centers around John Braddocks and his dog Jake who were fishing aboard the Salty Dog one night when they were slammed by a 20 foot rogue wave and tossed into the raging sea. Jake headed west, swimming for 3 days and 3 nights with the man holding fast to his collar, and the townspeople built a gathering place in the village and named it The Salty Dog Cafe - in honor of Jake’s heroic feat. As a result, portraits of Jake wearing his yellow southwestern hat adorn the walls, assuring him a place in nautical history.
