an authentic antique, handmade, wooden and metal

Birdcage

probaly 17th, perhaps 18th century,

the glass water container seems a 19th century adjusted replacement,
a much taller, missing, vessel or container fits to the side, on and against wooden supporters,
the present one also fits on the front, but there the wire is broken,
the terracotta vessel might be original and is placed outside on the top side,
because the singing bird could sit outside, although with a leash on his leg,

see the famous painting of Het Puttertje / The Goldfinch by Carel Fabritius, from 1654, in museum Mauritshuis, The Hague

this cage has a pull out, wooden tray to able cleaning the cage floor,
the access door on the back is missing,
it can stand on it's feet and it has a sturdy metal hook to hang it against the wall
and a handle to carry it around or to outside,

these 3 details: the wall hook and the feet and the handle together on one cage
convinced us it is a 17th century cage,
but you may disagree.....

on the front the middle piece of wood is for supporting a food or water vessel,
beside that piece there are 4 other pieces; the top 2 seem for decoration,
but the lower 2 seem to have had a certain function;
it might be possible a sitting tray could be placed there, for the bird to sit on,
but the middle one can also be a replacement / adjustment,
and the 4 others the supportes of .... ? We do not know

Birdcages were a common sight in many 17th century Dutch homes, not only for the rich people. Aside from keeping birds (large and small) for food, pet birds were valued for their song and liveliness. Bird hunters have been pictured for many century's how they catched the singing birds.

Small birds in cages are often encountered in 17th century Dutch genre scenes, in which they usually have a sexual connotation, because the Dutch word VOGELEN - birding, means to engage in sex.....
