a very well artisticly carved wooden, tribal art figure, known as:
Bateba Thil
representeing "returned people" or "ancestral spirits" from the Lobi People, Burkina Faso,
here it represents a Hermaphrodite, a character with female and male appearance,
therefor it might be a Bateba Ti Bala,
and for it standing with the arms hanging down on the side: Bateba Phuwe
and for it's size of 40cm: Bateba Thilbou Manainni Sono,
we see a dual sex figure with breasts and male genitalia,
with a beautiful, rare high hairstyle,
a delicate carved face with a clear individual and personal look,
exeptional is the way the carver carved the chin with a charming little point
and the way the chin line runs on to the jaws, towards the incorporated ears,
the carver made the effort to carve the nose, eyes and brows as an almost abstract symmetrical feature,
a strong neck, broad shoulders, long arms resting on the thighs,
strong legs bent and set apart on wedge-like feet
and, again almost abstract, carved buttocks,
condition: authentic and smooth crusty patine - not faked,
the right auricle and left foot are partial missing - these are old damages (see patine),
it does stand without support,
age unknown, but seen it's authentic, not faked and honest patine, probably early 1900's
height: circa 40 cm / circa 15.7 inch
weight: circa 950 gram
