This German pewter lidded beer stein is only 5 ½” tall with a 2 ½” base but is packed with great detail.
The central colorful relief shows a man and a woman dancing in traditional costumes.  The mountains are behind them with a cobalt blue background.  The left side panel shows a mountain chalet with pine trees and a road leading to the front door; the right side has a large building (hotel?) in the mountains.  All three panels have a cobalt blue saltglaze background.  Above each picture is a band of hearts laying sideways.  Above and below are bands of golden lusterware.
From the Reinhold Merkelbach Grenzhausen factory, it has the mark RM (Reinhold Merkelbach) inside a G (Grenzhausen) incised on the bottom.  Also incised is Made in Germany, which dates it before 1949 (when Germany was divided).  The stylized RMG mark was used between 1945 and 1965.  The number 4140 and the letter W is incised on the bottom.
The pewter lid is conical with detailed thumblift and 3-ring hinge.  The outside of the lid is darker with the desirable patina of old pewter; the inside is slightly lighter but still with patina.  The lid is only 1 ½” with the thumblift about ½”; the handle is less than 2 ½”.
This German beer stein is in very good condition considering its age.  Some of the lusterware on the bottom is worn off but it doesn’t affect the overall beauty of this piece.  I have another stein this size and similar design available in another listing.
