Dean examines a variety of political and social ideas of his time through the device of conversations between a wide range of people from Highlanders to Irishmen. He covers subjects from city life, gambling, female politicians, estate management (upon which Dean had written another book), inclosing the New Forest, John Stewart Mill's views on property, the feudal system, Monarchy and democracy, a proposal for a universal basic income, imports, Trade Unions, the Irish Land Act, and much more besides.
