Print 2: Jean le Rond d'Alembert Jean-Baptiste le Rond d'Alembert (16 November 1717 – 29 October 1783) was a French mathematician, mechanician, physicist, philosopher, and music theorist. Until 1759 he was co-editor with Denis Diderot of the Encyclopédie. -- This offering is for two (2) separate and different very rarely offered copper-plate engraved portrait prints mounted back to back on a piece of album paper. Either of the engravings is well worth the item value. See Important Note below.

HISTORICAL INFORMATION: |
Important Note about condition: Each print is spot-glued (in two spots - top and bottom) to the album page in which it was mounted more than 150 years ago. The print does not lie perfectly flat due to the laid paper and its attachment to the backing. As a result, the picture can cause areas of shading to appear, which are not really there. However, these prints do have occasional foxing and other faults. These are very rare 210+ year old copper plate print images of famous individuals rarely seen in portraits and well worth consideration. Prints are priced to sell as a great piece of 210+ year old history. I don't use the word "rare" often, but it does apply to these engravings.

The Nature of Prints & Engravings: It was not until the 20th century that prints were commonly produced for the print itself. Prior to this, virtually all prints (and engravings) were produced as illustrations to be included in a manuscript, book, newspaper, or pamphlet. Therefore, a vast majority of original prints have been over the years removed from these original sources. Prints are produced using many different techniques: relief printing (woodcut & wood engraving), intaglio printing (steel & copper plate engraving, drypoint, aquatint, etc), and planographic printing (lithography, serigraphy, inkjet, laser, etc.). While the commercial value of a print depends on such factors as age, rarity, and condition, the real value of a print is its tie to its history and/or its esthetic beauty. |
