Lettres de Milady Juliette Catesby,
A Milady Henriette Campley, Son Amie
By Marie Jeanne Riccoboni
Published Amsterdam, aux depens de la Compagnie, 1759, Nouvelle edition, reprinted in the same year as the first edition.
Both of these books were best sellers of their time. La Dot de Suzette (Suzette’s Dowry) is a novel of the changing times in which the author lived, written while he was in hiding during the Directoire (he was imprisoned under the Reign of Terror). Fievee is a most interesting figure, journalist and writer, but also a spy, and he lived in an openly gay relationship with Theodore Leclerq. They are buried in the same tomb at Père Lachaise Cemetery.
Lettres de Milady Juliette Catesby is a romance about a jilted woman, who discovers the true reason for her abandonment, and it ends with the reuniting of the lovers. The book is a French novel ostensibly set in England, and it was quite quickly translated into English, where it sold very well also.
The two books are bound together in a half leather binding over green marbled paper boards.
The first title has an engraved frontispiece. There is some repaired damage to the half title and the title pages, and an early owner has inscribed the name of the author on the title page. On the top of the first page of the preface an owner name is inscribed. There are marks to pages here and there, and one page has lost a small triangle of its lower corner. Six leaves have repaired closed tears with some small losses to the bottom edges (no text loss). There are a very few other nicks to pages, and some marks here and there, but mainly clean.
12mo, 16cm (6.5inches) tall, xii, 233 pages.
The second title has a title page in red and black. One leaf has a triangle torn from the lower front, without loss of text. There are occasional marks to pages, and some leaves have age-toning.
12mo, 16cm (6.5inches) tall, 174 pages.
The condition of the book is overall good to very good, tightly bound with no missing pages. Two very interesting 18th century novels. Text is in French.
