Left turning tool holders are designed for use when turning the workpiece from the left side of the lathe. They have a 90-degree angle between the cutting edge and the shank, which allows them to be used for both roughing and finishing operations.

Right turning tool holders are designed for use when turning the workpiece from the right side of the lathe. They also have a 90-degree angle between the cutting edge and the shank, but the cutting edge is angled in the opposite direction to the left turning tool holder. This allows them to be used for both roughing and finishing operations when turning from the right side of the lathe.

Straight turning tool holders are designed for use when turning the workpiece from either the left or right side of the lathe. They have a 0-degree angle between the cutting edge and the shank, which allows them to be used for straight turning operations. They are often used for finishing cuts on cylindrical workpieces.

All of these turning tool holders are designed to take square tool steel, which is commonly used for turning operations due to its strength and durability. The square shape of the tool steel allows it to be securely held in place by the tool holder, preventing it from rotating or moving during machining operations.
