You are bidding on a historical music teaching chart titled "The Home Modulator, or Pointing Board for Teaching Tunes in the Tonic Sol-Fa Method of Singing."
Published: 1902 - 1917
Publisher: J. Corwen & Sons, London
Price: One Half Penny
Dimensions: 14 ½” x 9”
The chart is an educational tool designed by John Curwen to teach sight-singing using the Tonic Sol-fa system (a pedagogical method that substitutes standard musical notation with syllables like Doh, Ray, Me, Fah, Soh, Lah, Te).
The middle column displays the standard major scale syllables vertically (DOH, TE, LAH, SOH, FAH, ME, RAY, DOH), complete with accidental indicators like fe, se, and ta to represent chromatic alterations.
The flanking columns show key changes (modulations) to the left and right, allowing singers to practice shifting keys smoothly by following a pointer or visual transition on the board.
The text at the bottom marks the chart as published by J. Curwen & Sons Ltd. at 24 Berners Street, London, W. It was priced affordably at One Half-penny
(or 25 copies for 9 pence) to make it widely available for home and school use
Theis is an original Edwardian Music School aid and does have some very light wear commensurate with being over 100 years old,, apart from which it is in excellent condition.
