A beautiful early 19th-century (c. 1800–1825) mixed-media religious picture depicting Saint Matthew the Evangelist receiving divine inspiration from an angel. This late Georgian to Regency period piece combines finely worked silk floss embroidery with delicately painted facial and anatomical details, a highly skilled technique documented in both English and Continental European convent and gentlewoman needlework of the era.

  • Origin: English or Continental European

  • Date: Early 19th Century (c. 1800–1825 / Georgian period)

  • Medium: Coloured silk floss (predominantly satin and long-and-short stitches) combined with watercolour/gouache painted details on a fabric ground

  • Subject: Saint Matthew the Evangelist and the Angel

  • Frame: Antique ebonised moulded wood frame, glazed

  • Dimensions: 21.5 cm Wide x 25 cm High (including frame)

  • Condition: Good antique condition for a piece approximately 200 years old. The coloured silks retain excellent lustre, with the vibrant blue robe particularly well-preserved. The delicately painted facial details remain crisp and remarkably clear. There is expected overall age-toning to the ground, with visible water staining to the lower left and minor, age-related thread wear. The antique ebonised frame features genuine age-related knocks, edge losses, and rubbing. The reverse has been re-sealed at a later date with modern brown paper tape.
