1927 FF Bosworth Evangelistic Party Peoples Tabernacle Altoona PA Revival
The Bosworth Evangelistic Party poses together outside the temporary People's Tabernacle building during their historic faith-healing revival crusade in Altoona, Pennsylvania. Standing near the center-right are the famous pioneer evangelist brothers F.F. Bosworth and B.B. Bosworth, surrounded by their traveling ministry team of choral singers, family members, and pianists.
The background features the massive wooden tabernacle structure decorated with large hand-painted campaign signs, while the team models excellent 1920s fashions, including dropped-waist flapper day dresses, a plush fox fur pelt stole, tailored men's sack suits, and a youth in classic knickerbocker trousers. The lower front edge preserves the original crisp white negative caption text reading verbatim: Bosworth Evangelistic Party. It is a phenomenal, clean, and incredibly sharp primary source visual record of early twentieth-century American Pentecostal and religious movement history.
Long before they became preachers, both brothers were famous professional musicians. F.F. Bosworth actually served as the official director for the massive 47-piece city band in Zion, Illinois, under early religious organizer John Alexander Dowie. B.B. Bosworth was a highly accomplished classical trombonist and choral conductor. They completely revolutionized tent revivals by treating their campaigns like high-energy musical concerts, using full choirs and horn sections to draw massive crowds.
In the late 1920s and early 1930s, the brothers became absolute trailblazers for early American radio broadcasting. They founded the "National Radio Revival Missionary Crusaders" out of station WJJD in Chicago. They were among the very first preachers to broadcast healing services across the airwaves, receiving over 250,000 fan letters from listeners coast-to-coast.
The brothers shared a deeply intertwined life that came to a remarkably poignant end. After traveling over a million miles together over a 50-year career, F.F. Bosworth passed away in Florida on January 23, 1958, at the age of 81. In an incredible twist of fate, his brother B.B. Bosworth passed away just a few weeks later on February 17, 1958.
