Union Pacific Corporation, with Union Pacific Railroad Co. as its primary subsidiary, is one of the largest rail networks in the U.S., operating across the western two-thirds of the country. The Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railway Co., known as the Rock Island Line, was once a competitor but went bankrupt in 1975, with some of its routes acquired by Union Pacific. The Gulf, Mobile and Ohio Railroad Co. operated in the southern U.S. and Midwest and later merged with the Illinois Central Railroad to form the Illinois Central Gulf Railroad.
