FIGHTING INDIANS OF THE WEST

(DEE BROWN with Martin F. Schmitt)

A portrait of courage in the struggle that dishonoured a nation

A Rare Find in the UK

“As long as I live, I will fight you for the last hunting grounds of my people.”  With these words, Red Cloud of the Oglala Sioux began the quarter century warfare that is a vital, yet misunderstood part of America’s history.

‘Fighting Indians of the West’ is the real story from the author of ‘Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee’.  With vivid text and a unique pictorial presentation, Dee Brown, famous historian of the Indian, introduces the men and the battles that changed an entire continent and the destiny of a nation, including:

            Red Cloud of the Sioux

            The conquest of Cochise

            The vision of Sitting Bull

The Ghost Dance and Wounded Knee

Here are the faces of the chiefs and the warriors, and the story of their long but futile struggle to save their bison and their elk, their earth and their sky.

This 1975 paperback edition book is in good overall condition, especially considering its age, however there are some signs of wear to the cover in the form of bumps, knocks, rubbing and marks to the edges and corners (see photograph).  All pages are present, tightly bound, and free from tears, creases, and any significant marks other than some age discolouration to the page edges and two lines of text underlined with a small annotation.  Additionally, the author page has a bookshop stamp printed and a price written in ink displayed.  This paperback runs to 248 pages (17.5cm x 10.5cm) and is very well illustrated with photographs throughout.  It is unusual to find this US publication available in the UK, especially in such condition.
