bothers with, the Leaky Cauldron is so shabby and so easily overlooked that
only witches and wizards ever notice the door at all. Step inside, past the dim
old bar and the pipe smoke and the low friendly hum, and you are already
halfway to another world.
For behind the pub, in a mean little walled yard,
waits the greatest secret in London. Tap the right bricks in the right order
and the wall folds itself aside to reveal Diagon Alley in all its crooked,
cobbled glory. The Leaky Cauldron is the humble hinge on which the whole
wizarding city swings, the last ordinary step before the extraordinary one.
And should you find yourself stranded out front
some dark evening, wand hand raised in hope, help arrives with a deafening
BANG. The Knight Bus rears up out of nowhere, violently purple and three
stories tall, brass fittings rattling, everything swaying, Stan Shunpike
hanging off the pole to announce your fare. Emergency transport for the
stranded witch or wizard, it will get you very nearly anywhere you like, at a
speed and a swerve you will feel in your stomach for hours.
Together, the hidden pub and the hurtling bus
make one perfect scene of arrivals and escapes, the two doors through which
every wizarding adventure in London tends to begin. Own them as a set and you
hold both halves of the journey: the quiet threshold to Diagon Alley, and the
