Rare Antique French Napoleon
III Silk Velvet Jewellery Casket c1880
This is a rare and luxurious antique French Napoleon III or
Victorian-era jewellery casket, made in Paris c1880. These gorgeous pieces would
have been made by craftsman such as Maison Alphonse Giroux was one
of the most celebrated luxury makers in Paris, known for supplying finely made
objects to the French court, so such items are often referred to as Palais
Royale.
The body is wrapped in a deep magenta, burgundy or plum-toned silk
velvet fabric. It features ornate gilt brass fittings that have scrolling
details in relief with a timeworn patina.
The fittings include a decorative top handle, stamped corner brackets, an
escutcheon plate over the keyhole, and small raised bun feet.
The hinged lid opens to reveal the red
silk interior. On the inside of the lid, the silk is richly ruched framing the
original bevelled mirror. The casket has a padded and tufted base.
This Beautiful box is in good condition for its age, the silk
velvet is timeworn, the silk lining has some minor damage. The gilt brass has
age related patina and wear to the gilding. The lock is complete, but has been
forced open, the catch is locked into position, the key is missing.
The casket measures approx. 23.7cm by 17.8cm by 9.5cm.
This magnificent jewellery box has so much charm, it
would make a fantastic addition to any collection.
