🌿 Plant Description

Paphiopedilum hirsutissimum is a highly distinctive and robust slipper orchid native to the highlands of Southeast Asia. It is famous for its large, horizontal, spoon-shaped lateral petals that feature heavy ruffling and stunning, bright magenta to violet-purple tips. The base of the petals and the dorsal sepal are beautifully densely spotted with dark brown and green.

True to its Latin name ("hirsutissimum" meaning very hairy), the flower stems, ovaries, and the backs of the flowers are completely covered in dense, dark hairs, giving the plant a fascinating, wild texture. Unlike mottled-leaf Paphiopedilums, this species features attractive, solid green, strap-like foliage.

  • Genus: Paphiopedilum
  • Species: hirsutissimum
  • Bloom Color: Green/yellow heavily spotted with brown, featuring bright purple/magenta petal tips.
  • Foliage: Solid, deep green strap leaves.
  • Blooming Season: Spring

💧 Care & Cultivation

Light Moderate indirect light (dappled shade). They can tolerate slightly brighter light than mottled-leaf Paphiopedilums, but must be protected from direct, hot sun to prevent leaf scorch.
Water Keep evenly moist during the active growing season (Spring/Summer). Water just as the top of the medium begins to dry. Reduce watering slightly in winter, but never allow the potting mix to dry out completely. Keep water out of the leaf crown to prevent rot.
Temperature Cool to Intermediate. Thrives with daytime temperatures around 70°F–80°F (21°C–27°C) and requires a distinct night-time temperature drop to 55°F–60°F (13°C–15°C) to initiate blooming.
Potting Media Requires a well-draining, airy mix. Medium-grade orchid bark mixed with perlite, coarse sponge rock, and a little horticultural charcoal works exceptionally well.
