Notes of interest:
C. S. Hammond & Co. was a major American commercial map publisher
and printing firm, founded by Caleb Stillson Hammond in 1900;
incorporated in 1901. Based in the New York area, it produced atlases,
wall maps, globes, school maps, and customized promotional maps. By
1929, it was one of the country’s leading map companies, rivaling Rand
McNally.
This particular map was produced as a finished promotional insert, and tucked between the pages of The Pittsburgh Press,
probably within a Sunday Issue. It is not dated, though attributed to
1929 by lots of various sources; likely prepared between late 1928 and
early 1929, so to include the information of the aviators' flights shown
on the map.
This promotional piece appeared and was distributed in more than one
newspaper! A surviving example is identified as having been issued by The Newark Ledger, showing that The Pittsburgh Press was not the sole distributor, and reads "Compliments of The Pittsburgh Press".
