Neatly rebound in green cloth with titles in gilt to spine. Measuring approx. 21.1cm x 13.3cm x 1cm. In good condition. Internally there are more recent endpapers to front and rear. Pencil detail to front endpaper. Lacking half title page. The title page and last text leaf are lightly toned/foxed. Pencil detail to verso of title page. Very pale occasional foxed patch. Odd small spot, mark, and corner crease, else in good, clean and firm condition.

By Dorothea Celesia (c1738-1790) a poet and playwright best known for this play Almida, her free translation of Voltaire's Tancrède (1760) notable for its emphasis on the heroine. David Garrick visited her when in Italy and produced her blank verse tragedy, Almida, at the Drury Lane Theatre. The play premiered on 1 January 1771 and had a successful run of ten nights, which afforded Celesia with some short-lived celebrity. Her version of the story is notable for its shift of focus from the warrior Tancred, as in Voltaire's original, to Almida, the heroine, and the latter's assertion of her right to choose her own spouse.

  • We offer FREE UK domestic shipping, fully tracked and insured.
  • We use several services for overseas shipping, under 5kg usually shipped via Royal Mail Tracked. Heavier shipments or faster courier services are available, and we will do our best to accommodate your preferred method.

Packaging
All our books will be carefully and securely packaged in custom made book boxes (The majority of which are produced Carbon Neutral). The Bubble packaging and boxes are all recyclable, and most tape used is environmentally friendly (we are constantly researching ways to reduce our environmental impact without compromising safe, secure and affordable shipping). We aim to send all items within 24-48 hours of payment.
